True Widow Announce West Coast US Tour

Thursday, January 28, 2010 - 1:16:05 PM

True Widow announces West Coast US Tour starting February 2010.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TRUE WIDOW TAKES TO THE ROAD FOR SPRING TOUR IN SUPPORT OF THEIR SELF-TITLED ALBUM

“a mix of shoegaze and post rock, displaying a knack for delivering the rock goods while keeping the pace slow and steady…No gimmicks, just awesome music." – CRAWDADDY

Los Angeles, CA, January 28, 2010True Widow, the sonic noir trio out of Dallas, known for their grunge-like riffs and wistful vocals, are announcing the launch of their spring tour dates, starting on February 19 in Denton, TX, and finishing in Los Angeles on March 6.

Led by Texas native, songwriter/guitarist Dan Phillips (former member of the emo-rock band, Slowride), the shoegaze musicians with the dreamy yet menacing undertones have been riding steady from the wave of praise from their self-titled 2008 debut album released through End Sounds.  The group’s debut album was produced by Matt Pence (Centro-Matic, Slowride) and mastered by Dave McNair (Buddy Guy, Double Trouble, Willie Nelson).

Vocals from Phillips and bassist/vocalist Nicole Estill are lauded for their captivating lyrics, ones that can take hold of the listener just long enough for the rhythmic bite of the instrumentals to strike. Summing up the trio is drummer Tim Starks adding a sense of cohesiveness to True Widow both in tone and rhythm.

Tracks “Duelist,” “Bleeder” and “A.K.A.” were well received by college radio landing the band on CMJ’s Top 200 chart.  Most recently, the band release a video for “A.K.A,” which was shot and cut in Sweden by Mats Ek.

Having made their way onstage at the 2009 Noise Pop Festival and performing at SXSW in both 2008 and 2009, as well as throughout the U.S. from coast to coast. Pete Freeman of the Dallas Observer puts it simply: “Dallas’ own True Widow has, well, basically come out of nowhere in the past couple months to fill the surprisingly heavy void within the city’s scene—and fill it quite capably, thanks.”

Country Standard Time Declared Album #10 In Their Top 30 ‘Best of 2009’ List

Los Angeles, CA, January 27, 2010 – In an era of cookie-cutter, made for radio, musical

appeal has fans scrambling for access to more live shows. Now, their collective plea has been

answered and a new tour is scheduled to cover the Pacific Coast and outward into the Southwest.

the dynamic bassist and lead singer of the Left Coast three-piece punk band MxPx, beneath all

the tattoos and piercings, the ranting and stage wrecking, Herrera has long been an acousticwielding

songsmith. MIKE HERRERA’S TUMBLEDOWN captures the punk rock energy of

MxPx, while also displaying the soulful experiences of Herrera’s travels along the lonely, open

road, coining their own unique pop-punk-a-billy sound.

MIKE HERRERA’S TUMBLEDOWN consists of Herrera as songwriter/lead vocals/guitar,

lead guitarist Jack Parker, standup bassist Marshall Trotland, and drummer Harley Trotland.

The Mag Seven To Release New Album Cotton Needle Sessions On October 6, 2009

Tuesday, September 22, 2009 - 5:07:15 PM

The Texas based band The Mag Seven have issued a press release to announce their upcoming album:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

THE MAG SEVEN
TO RELEASE NEW INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM,
“COTTON NEEDLE SESSIONS” ON OCTOBER 6

Los Angeles, CA, September 22, 2009 – Texas musical gun slingers THE MAG SEVEN ready the release of their fifth album, COTTON NEEDLE SESSIONS on October 6 through label, End Sounds.
THE MAG SEVEN are “instrumentalists for hire,” combining their musical influences of Black Flag and the Descendents to John Coltrane and Ennio Marricone, The Ventures, and Stravinsky, they have managed to produce a sound of their own that includes everything from punk-surf and spaghetti western themes to jazz.
COTTON NEEDLE SESSIONS is a true instrumental journey. “I want people to enjoy it for what it is and listen to it from start to finish (as was intended).  The songs and sequence work together like the soundtrack for a date,” explains guitarist and songwriter, Brandon Landelius. “It starts out slow and suggestive and slowly builds tension and finally ends with...you know what...probably in a car somewhere...”
With the album starting off as mainly a jazz collection, with a bit of a surf bend to it, Landelius wanted to do something different with their fifth album.  He enlisted the help of close friend, Bill Stevenson, to play drums. Stevenson brought in all of the key elements of a stellar percussionist, expertise that extends far beyond the norm. Bassist, Donivan Blair’s playing is also a departure from familiar territory and exhibits an amazing sense for music’s inner nature, regardless of the genre. Together, they are a musical tour-de-force and an excellent instrumental ensemble.
One track that illustrates this is the lead track “Lahaina,” which if you can tell by the name is a musical journey that takes you through the scenic beauty of Hawaii. “A1A” too brings to mind surreal beaches, but across the U.S. to the coasts of Florida.  Landelius explains, “I came up with the chord progression for “A1A” one night while driving down A1A (Fort Lauderdale) almost 10 years ago.  I didn’t finish writing the song until we were in the studio this February, but I have a serious weak spot for the ocean and that particular drive was always one of my favorites when I lived in Florida.”  The full album is a picturesque journey to the ears, but most voyages do come to a halt and with this musical journey the last track featured is “Panty Dropper,” which with the concept of the album and song sequence, is a perfect title and fit.
THE MAG SEVEN’s origins reach back to 1998, in Dallas, TX with bassist Donivan Blair, Dan Phillips (Slowride, True Widow) and Scott Brayfield (Slowride) on drums. The original line-up recorded two full length CDs; Eighth Round Knock Out and Use Your Powers For Good, Not Evil.  After a few years together the band went through a change with Phillip’s departure, and added guitarist, Brandon Landelius. They played shows regionally and wrote new material until, Landelius relocated. During the downtime that came with the loss of another member, Blair kept moving forward musically, playing as part of the groups Armstrong and Only Crime.  In late 2005, the decision was made to put THE MAG SEVEN back together, and after enlisting the help of his Only Crime band mates, Bill Stevenson and Zach Blair, the band released, The Future Is Ours If You Can Count (2006) through Austin label, End Sounds.  Soon after, Landelius returned to Texas, where he and Blair started preparing new material for their next release – Knife To A Gunfight (End Sounds 2008) featuring the band’s original drummer, Scott Brayfield.
While writing the songs for COTTON NEEDLE SESSION, Landelius was heavily influenced by artists as varied as Miles Davis, Eric Dolphy, and Alicia Keys, and wanted to write instrumentals for Knife to a Gunfight that would project a very different sound, while keeping to the heart of the instrumentation and arrangements that inspired them. In the end, THE MAG SEVEN has given the whole project a unique sound all its own and yet far different from any previous album before it. COTTON NEEDLE SESSIONS exceeds their expectations and they await the feedback to come.
THE MAG SEVEN is currently based out of Amarillo, Texas and is made up of bassist Donivan Blair, drummer John Lerma (The Humans, Tennessee Tuckness, BSATBAAGB) and guitarist Brandon Landelius.

COTTON NEEDLE SESSIONS Track Listing:
  1. Lahaina
